Three Blind Mice

★ Three Blind Mice History:

Another one of the many nursery rhymes that have origins in British tradition and history, this one bears a hidden message of political infamy as well, which has earned it the number 3753 in the Roud Folk Song Index.

The rhyme’s first appearance dates back to 1609, where it was published along with melody in Deuteromelia or The Seconde part of Musicks melodie. It is speculated that the author of the rhyme was also the editor of the book, Thomas Ravenscroft.

The actual story is likely a not to the execution of three Protestant bishops, as ordered by Queen Mary the First. Although there are a couple discrepancies, such as the Oxford Martyrs by names Latimer, Ridley and Cranmer being burned at the stake instead of blinded, this option seem quite plausible, with a possible witty remark to their blindness, since if the writers of the rhyme were crypto-Catholics the aforementioned likely refered to their Protestantism.

★ Three Blind Mice Lyrics:

Three blind mice. Three blind mice.
See how they run. See how they run.
They all ran after the farmer‘s wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a sight in your life,
As three blind mice?

Three blind mice. Three blind mice.
See how they run. See how they run.
They all ran after the farmer‘s wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a sight in your life,
As three blind mice?
